Tanjore school of painting is among the fore most paintings style of south India. The technique of painting on wood or clothe in Tanjore school is very unique. This art form is known for its vibrant colours, great composition and expressive faces. The Tanjore Paintings carry relief work which is more pronounced than other similar school of paintings. Besides employing pure gold leaf to cover parts of the paintings, Tanjore painting are also embellished with coloured stones, beads, and mirrors, adding an additional layer of texture and visual interest.
The themes of these paintings are mostly drawn from Vedic culture like Bhagwatha, Ramayana & also includes figures like Lakshmi Devi, Nataraja, Ganesha, Venkateshwara swamy, Satyanarayana Swamy, Narasimha Swamy, Sri Krishna themes in Tanjore concept have been a major attraction from centuries. Group themes like Srinivasa Kalyanam, Rama Pattabhishekam, Shiva Puranam, Dasavatara are widely in demand these days too. We have also developed new themes like Raja Ravivarma Series, Ragini Paintings & Subjects based on customer requirements. At Shaaranga, You can be rest assured of purity of gold & Perfect anatomy with beautiful faces. Our paintings are ideal for Pooja Room, Residential & corporate interiors and gifting for any occasion.
It may kindly be noted that most of the Tanjore painting artists are very religious in nature, culturally very rooted and traditional to the core, we at Shaaranga very strongly believe that the external influence in their art forms isn’t there, they have been masters with great artistic skills and innovative in execution, yet they concentrated on their indigenous religious subjects. Unfortunately, it has been a practice from the British era; some so called historians have always linked indigenous art forms to some external art forms, they have even said the same thing about the Tanjore paintings, they linked it to the foreign art forms in which human figurative illustrations are forbidden. We have spent a good part of our life in this handicrafts industry, been with the artisans for more than three decades, did our own research hence can vouch for the purity of the art forms.
Key Features of Tanjore Paintings:
1. Material & Surface:
Tanjore paintings are traditionally created on wooden planks, often covered with a thin layer of cloth or paper. The surface is then coated with a special mix of adhesive and gesso (a white paste) to create texture and depth.

2. Use of Gold Foil:
One of the unique features of Tanjore paintings is the extensive use of gold foil. The gold is applied to areas around the figures, jewellery, and clothing, giving the painting a rich, divine look and opulent feel. This makes the art work standout with great visual appeal.

3. Embellished with Gemstones and Beads:
Traditional Tanjore paintings are enhanced with coloured stones, beads, and mirrors, adding an additional layer of texture and visual appeal. These materials help in highlighting the jewellery, traditional kiritams and the attire.

4. Colour Scheme:
Tanjore paintings are usually vibrant and rich in colours, predominant use of vibrant colours like red, green, yellow, blue, and gold make them stand out. Traditionally colours were often derived from natural pigments and were mixed with other materials to create depth but with time and also due to scarcity of good pigment driven colours artisans are gradually using other modern colours too.

5. Technique:
The technique involves drawing of the traditional theme usually with a pencil, A mixture of chalk powder (or limestone powder) and a binding agent like Arabic gum or tamarind seed paste is used to create the embossed surfaces, this process is also called muck work. The semi-precious stones and glass beads are carefully fixed onto the areas of the design that will be embellished, such as jewellery and crowns. It is followed by the careful application of gold leaf, and using a very fine brush, artists add intricate patterns and fine outlines to the figures, clothing, and ornaments. This stage also includes painting the facial features.

Present-Day Tanjore Paintings:
While the traditional techniques have remained largely unchanged particularly among the senior artisans from the traditional artisanal families, contemporary Tanjore painters are experimenting with new materials, designs, and subjects. Today, Tanjore paintings are popular as decorative items and spiritual artworks, often found in temples, homes, and galleries worldwide. It is always advisable to procure Tanjore paintings from genuine sources like Shaaranga as it is felt that several shortcut methods are being used in the market to make and deliver quickly, at Shaaranga every care is taken to ensure the genuineness of the raw materials like Gold leaf, stones, emboss technique and the process, we always encourage the traditional families whose forefathers have been instrumental in protecting these art forms.
